April 2011 has been a horrific month for severe weather so far with more than 600 reports of tornadoes, more than 40 tornado-related deaths and unthinkable destruction.

As the wild weather pattern continues this week, the month’s total number of tornadoes continues to rise. There is a good chance that April 2011 will end up being the most active April on record for tornadoes.

With May and June typically being the most active months of the year for severe weather, people are wondering if the trend will continue and make 2011 a record-setting year.

Stunning Northern Lights Seen at 30,000 Feet

A passenger on an Air France flight from San Francisco to Paris captured stunning images, including an aurora borealis, in a time-lapse video of nearly 2,500 photos.

The YouTube user, who calls himself Boltron, uploaded the video on April 1, which has since surpassed half a million views.

The stunning scenery Boltron captured includes snow-capped mountains, the Atlantic Ocean and a starry sky complete with an aurora borealis, a phenomenon that occurs when charged particles collide in the atmosphere due to the Earth’s magnetic field.

According to the uploader’s description [sic], “The flight path from SF to Paris goes well over greenland and the arctic circle, where you can see "northern” lights from all sides of the plane, which explains why I could shoot them facing South.“

After the 11-hour flight, the user compiled the 2,459 photos into the time-lapse. However, some "movie magic” had to be used to complete the project.

“The photos during take-off and landing are all computer models and totally rendered because I would never use an electronic device during times when the FAA prohibits them,” he wrote.

The next major severe weather outbreak, including strong tornadoes, will take aim at the South Central states later today (Apr. 14, 2011)
