<b>Rare, Magnificent Northern Lights Seen in US, South</b><p>

here was a rare and beautiful display of the Northern Lights across parts of the U.S., as far south as Georgia, Monday night.</p><p>

The green and red glow of the Aurora Borealis was seen in the midlatitudes due to a strong geomagnetic storm in progress. NOAA describes a geomagnetic storm as a disturbance “in the geomagnetic field caused by gusts in the solar wind that blows by Earth”. The Northern Lights occur when the solar wind interacts with the Earth’s magnetic field.</p><p>

<b>Is Another Dust Bowl in the Works?</b><p>

A number of sizable dust storms, ongoing drought and intense heat this past summer have many wondering if another Dust Bowl is in the works.</p><p>

The most recent dust storm in Lubbock, Texas, along with other large storms near Tucson, Ariz. in early October and the haboobs in Phoenix during July, to name a few, certainly are signs of the times.</p><p>

<b>Texas Rain Prospects in Upcoming Days</b><p>

While nothing but bright sunshine is in store for drought-hammered Texas through Friday, there will be two opportunities for rain through next week.</p><p>

A disturbance dropping into the southern Plains could ignite showers and thunderstorms over Oklahoma City, Dallas and all of the Arklatex Saturday afternoon and night.</p><p>

While any rainfall would be beneficial, there is the possibility that some thunderstorms could turn severe with damaging winds and hail.</p><p>

Snow and Wicked Cold Could Skew Early Primaries

In order to compete with sunny Florida’s push to the front of the primary season, Iowa and New Hampshire have moved their caucus and primary dates up. However, the move puts their voters in line to cast their ballot during the heart of winter.

“Is the weather going to affect [voter turnout]? It really does,” stated Timothy Hagle, University of Iowa political science professor.

Iowa politicians moved the caucuses from February to January. The month of January is typically the coldest time of the year, with high temperatures averaging in the 30s.

<b>Texas Drought Affects Monarch Butterflies Annual Migration South</b><p>

Monarch butterflies migrating south to Mexico have reached Texas and will have difficulty finding the water and flowers needed to complete their journey to their winter roosting site.</p><p>

The butterflies migrate from places as far north as Winnipeg, Canada, and as far east as Maine, according to Washingtonpost.com. They travel along the Eastern Seaboard to their final destination in Mexico. They will spend the winter in a forest about 60 miles west of Mexico City.</p><p>

As the butterflies reach Texas they will have a hard time finding any water or flowers due to the severe drought that has gripped the state for months.</p><p>
